What is a “nuc” or a “package”?

A Nuc (pronounced “newk”) is short for nucleus colony. It’s a mini hive which usually consists of 5 deep Langstroth frames (2 brood combs, 2 honey/pollen, 1 empty), bees and a mated queen. It has the advantage of a laying queen with brood and wax already built, but it usually is a little more expensive than a package.

A package of bees is a box (wood/wirescreen or plastic) that contains 3 pounds of bees (~10,000), sugar water, and a new, mated queen in a cage. The bees will need to build their own comb and accept the queen. It is good for hives that already have comb and for non-deep Langstroth hives (e.g., all medium boxes or top-bar hives). Packages are usually cheaper than nucs.
