“Diagnosing Dead Outs” Talk and 2023 BCBA Board of Directors Nominations
January 11, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Featured Presentation: Every beekeeper knows the heart-break of finding their colony either full of dead bees, or containing no bees at all. What compounds the heart-break is that so often we don’t even know why. Was it something we did wrong? Or was there just something we could have done better? Maybe it wasn’t even my fault at all? In this talk, we’ll go over exactly how to take a hive apart to preserve the evidence inside, and we’ll learn how to read the clues contained within the hive, even if there are no bees left. Every beekeeper loses colonies, but the best ones learn from their mistakes, move on, and become better beekeepers.
About Tina Sebestyen: Tina keeps bees in Langstroth, top bar, and long Langstroth hives and runs 20-30 colonies. She learned beekeeping from wonderful mentors, “old guys”, as well as through mentoring others as the founder of the Four Corners Beekeepers Association. She is past vice president of the Colorado State Beekeepers Association and is the producer and current coordinator of the Colorado Master Beekeeper Program. She is a frequent contributor for the American Bee Journal and Bee Culture magazines from her farm in SW Colorado. In addition to speaking and writing about bees, Tina produces queens, nucs, or honey (depending on the year), and does structural bee removals.
