2022 October 5th Meeting – Conserving Native Bees

October 5, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Conserving Native Bees
October 5th, 2022  6:30pm-8:30pm

Our Vulnerable Bees – Managing Honey Bees
While Conserving our Native Pollinators

with Dr. Adrian Carper

Our October 5th native bee meeting will be a triple header!

First, our very own Miles McGaughey will give an update on the Tom Theobald Native Pollinator Legacy Project to restore native bees in the Marshall Fire burn area.

Our featured speaker this month is Dr. Adrian Carper from the CU Boulder Museum of Natural History.

Lastly, Steve Armstead from the Colorado Front Range Xerces Society will talk on “Helping Native Pollinators and Enhancing their Habitats.”

We’ll be giving away some fun native pollinator books and a native bee nesting box!

Featured Presentation: Native bees are Colorado’s most vulnerable pollinators, given their exceptional diversity, complex natural histories, and a lack of data on their current and historic distributions, yet honey bees garner the majority of attention in terms of their decline. Moreover, there are still many misconceptions and misunderstandings about interactions between honey bees and native bees, which can lead to heated discussions around the impacts of honey bee management on conservation. In this talk, I will introduce you to the fascinating diversity of our native bees, explore why they are our most vulnerable pollinators, discuss factors (including honey bees) that affect them, and summarize what I’ve learned from recent discussions with beekeepers about their concerns. Throughout, I hope to engage with you too, as local beekeepers, to learn about your interests and concerns, and together, explore how all of us can help conserve our native pollinators.

About Dr. Adrian Carper: Dr. Carper is a community ecologist and has studied pollinators, their natural history, and ecology for over a decade. His current research through the Museum of Natural History focuses on the impacts of human land-use on native bee community ecology, and how natural history knowledge can help inform their conservation.
