Biography

Michigan native Lawrence (Larry) Connor departed Michigan State University upon completion of his Ph.D. dissertation on strawberry pollination, and assumed the position of extension apicultural entomologist at The Ohio State University (Columbus). There his program attracted the attention of investors interested in moving the Dadant Starline and Midnite hybrid queen program to Florida to establish of the world's first mass production facility for the instrumental inseminated queen honey bees. Seeking educational support for his learning-disabled son, Connor moved to Connecticut where he established Beekeeping Education Service, offering educational program for beekeepers. Later he purchased Wicwas Press from Dr. Roger and Mary Lou Morse, and has published over a dozen titles dealing with bees, beekeeping, queen rearing and pollination.

Connor is currently a regular contributor to Bee Culture Magazine, with emphasis on queen and drone biology and colony management. Recently he began a series of articles on the biological basis of beekeeping practices. He has authored a number of extension publications, a series of slides sets, a video program (which he also appeared in and directed), two scientific proceedings (as editor), and scientific articles. He served as editor of the EAS Journal, Honey Producer Magazine and Bee Science. He is currently writing a book of his own, called Beekeeping Essentials.

His artwork and photography have been awarded prizes in local art shows. He has appeared in, produced and/or directed nearly thirty local community theater productions. Connor is also involved in Connecticut civil rights issues.

He has two adult children -- a daughter who is a nurse in Alaska, and a son who is a social worker in Connecticut.

BEEKEEPING CLASSES BEING PLANNED
Posted: March 25, 2005

Three classes on beekeeping topics are being planned in response to a high level of interest among BCBA members who signed up at the Feb. and March meetings:
  • A roundtable discussion of organic beekeeping will be organized by Bob Thayer and Terra Malmstrom for later this spring
  • A program on top-bar hive beekeeping is being organized by Miles McGaughey (with assistance from Bret Halford), which will be primarily a field trip to Miles' top-bar apiary this season
  • A class on candlemaking is being organized to be offered in the fall by Miles McGaughey and Evelyn Freytag
People who signed up for these classes will be called as soon as date, location and fee (if any) have been determined. Details about the classes also will be posted here in the "Upcoming Events' section of the website. Contact Pat Butler (303/440-0586) to get your name on the list of participants to be called (or if you'd like to help the instructors). Because some of these classes may involve costs (room rental, supplies, and/or instructor honoraria), advance registration probably will be required.

The idea behind these classes was to see if BCBA members can organize and/or teach classes of interest to the membership, so it's great to see these instructors volunteer and we hope the classes are well attended. Besides these 3 topics, over 2 dozen people expressed interest in double-queening and splits, but no one volunteered to teach such a class this season. Anyone interested in doing so should contact Pat.

Boulder County Fair Honey Competition

Date: August 3 to August 10, 2002
Location: Longmont County Fair Grounds

Information about entering your honey in the Boulder County Fair:

  1. You need to complete an application form, which is in the 'fair book' available by calling 303-772-7170 or going to the fairground-based fair office at Hover(95th) and Nelson Rds in Longmont. (As far as I know, it isn't possible to register online - you have to sign the form). There is no charge to enter.
  2. The honey competition is part of "open class creating living and art" that starts on p. 49; honey is discussed p. 52 (including categories, containers, labels, etc.)
  3. Application for the competition is due at the fair or extension office no later than July 8.
  4. Honey can be entered if it was harvested AFTER last year's fair (which ended around Aug 10, as I recall).
  5. You need to get your honey to the fair on July 31 between 2 and 6 pm. Judging is the following day (you need not be present to win). (Prizes in each category are $2 (1st), $1.50 (2s), $1 (3d). The Boulder County Beekeepers' Assoc presents a special award for the winner in the 'dark/mixed' category.)
  6. You have to leave the honey on display until August 11, when it must be picked up between 9 am and noon.
If people are interested in entering the competition but cannot make the drop off and/or pick up dates, it may be possible for a few of us to help out with that task, so let Pat Butler know.

This is a good way to publicize our local beekeepers' wares to the general public and to interject some friendly competition among us, so I hope everyone will consider entering.

- Pat Butler
